A nail-biting match between the Dallas Fuel and the San Francisco Shock decided the champion of the Overwatch League Season 2022.
Dueling for the championship were two teams with quite different stories to tell about how they got there. Dallas Fuel came out on top, which cemented their performance throughout the season; however, SF Shock sure did put them in a tough spot after almost completing the underdog lower bracket run, and they came up inches short of the trophy themselves. Dallas Fuel came out on top, which cemented their performance throughout the season.
Winning the OWL 2022 Grand Final was Dallas Fuel
Since the beginning of this year, the Overwatch League has been going on, but the competition has been narrowed down thanks to the Playoffs that have already taken place. Before the weekend of the finals, there were just two matches remaining to play and three teams still standing. San Francisco Shock and Dallas Fuel both just finished deep runs in the winner bracket, and Houston Outlaws and Dallas Fuel both just finished deep runs in the loser bracket. It was all supposed to come to a head around 5 o’clock Pacific Time on Saturday, November 5th.
There are, of course, the customary stories being told about the Overwatch League as well. The weekend of the Finals is not that exciting, there is usually one team that stands out as the clear favorite, etc. etc. etc. However, for this season’s Grand Final, we were treated to a real treat, with seven maps being played and a lot of exciting action.
Dallas Fuel had a good season overall, capturing first place in the inaugural Clash and first place in the Summer Showdown. They have also breezed through the playoffs; since they entered the bracket, few of their games have been competitive. Former back-to-back champions Shock have fought their way through the lower bracket to the final. We were prepared with two contrasting storylines coming into the final since they made it through the entire bracket and improved on their performance.
The Finale was decided as Fuel and Shock both dispatched of Outlaws quickly. The most dominant team of the split is on one side, while the Cinderella bracket narrative has a team that advances all the way through the elimination rounds to the championship.
Dallas, though, ultimately stopped the Shock’s ascent after 7 arduous games and sealed their season. It took five years for them to achieve their glory. After finishing in second place for the most of Season 4, Fuel ascend to the top of the OWL scene.
The OWL DROPS WORKED EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE BUGGY FOR SOME USERS
As usual, the Overwatch League provides players an incentive to watch by offering free Overwatch 2 cosmetics. Due to the increasing cost of these cosmetics, the payout is more than in prior seasons.
The available skins for viewing the League began at the start of the Playoffs and functioned normally until the weekend. The incentives that some users received for viewing the OWL 2022 Grand Final appear to be flawed:
- Half an Hour Watched – Grand Finals 2 spray
- 1 Hour Watched – Sojourn skin and Pulse pistol name card
- 2 Hours Watched – Junker Queen and Kiriko Skins
Although it appears that the majority of users received their drops, some viewers did not have their view progress accurately monitored and were therefore not eligible for the drops. We are yet unsure of how the problem will be handled.
